A cancer diagnosis is almost always based on biopsy results. There are several types of breast biopsies, and your doctor will choose the best one suited for you.

Some of the advanced biopsies that our pathologists perform and/or interpret include:

• Sentinel Lymph Node Mapping can lead to earlier detection and diagnosis
• FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization) is a form of gene detection that can be used to determine a patient's course of treatment

Once your biopsy is performed, the tissues and cells will be examined. The description of key characteristics of the tumor plays an essential role in treatment planning and prognosis.

After a breast cancer diagnosis it may be necessary for you to seek out a second opinion. You may decide to obtain a second opinion to confirm your first diagnosis or your choice of treatment, learn about other options available, or to fulfill a requirement of your insurance plan.
